Vacancies for new Councillors

Who can apply?

If you are interested in local issues, if you wish to serve your Community, if you could provide a voice for residents, the Parish Council could be an ideal opportunity for you.

The best way to find out more is to come along to a meeting and see what it is like in practice. The Meetings Calendar gives information on upcoming meeting dates and times.

Eligibility: applications can be considered from anyone over the age of 18 that has lived in the Parish of Fulford or within 3 miles of the Parish boundary for at least 12 months and from anyone who works or owns land within the Parish that has done so for at least 12 months.

The councillor role and application process.

We are looking for new councillors who have some knowledge of local issues, care about the community and have the ability to work with others to resolve issues.

The role involves attending 8 – 12 meetings per year, plus a modest time commitment to the work of the council between meetings.

Councillors work co-operatively in small groups in areas of regular responsibility, such as looking after the Council’s open spaces, Cemetery and the Social Hall, evaluating planning applications and addressing climate and ecological matters. We welcome potential councillors with energy and ideas about how we can work more closely with the community. Councillors work closely with the Parish Clerk, who manages most of the Parish Council’s day-to-day responsibilities. We welcome people at all stages of their career.

If you would like to know more, please contact the Parish Clerk.

There are opportunities for new councillors at present. Councillors can either be elected in the course of  local government elections every 4 years or co-opted to the council to fill any casual vacancies in between elections.

The council encourages prospective applicants to attend a meeting before deciding if they wish to apply. After attending that first meeting, anyone wanting to become a councillor is asked to apply in writing for co-option to the Parish Council. The application can be by letter or email and should outline why you wish to be a Parish Councillor and what you believe you could contribute to the Parish Council, including any specific areas of expertise/skills that you feel should be considered if applicable. Applications may also include a C.V. but this is not required.  The application will be considered at the next meeting of the council and a decision will be taken at that meeting.
