Open Spaces and Playing Fields

There are a number of green spaces for various types of recreation within Fulford. There are two children’s play areas, one on Fordlands Road and the other on School Lane. Both cater for toddlers and young children and are on one side of much larger green spaces. The School Lane area is used for football and the playground there was renovated in 2018.

The village green is located at the edge of the River Ouse.

The entrance to the playing field can be found next to the bus stop opposite the entrance to Fulford Cemetery. The field has a fenced off children’s play area, basketball court, football goal posts, outdoor gym equipment and a BMX course and plans are underway to increase tree planting on the field to areas of woodland.

There are bins provided on the field and the Parish Council requests that rubbish is left in the bins provided or taken home (and recycled wherever possible).  Please keep the field clean and litter free for everyone to enjoy.

Dogs must be kept on leads at all times on the field and dog walkers are requested to tidy up after their canine friends using the bins provided.

School Lane Playing Field (Parish Field)

The Parish Field at School Lane has 3 entrances, the first on School Lane behind St Oswald’s School, the second from the Germany Beck access pathway and the third from Fulfordgate next to the entrance to Fulford School.

This large area of open space has a children’s play area with cableway, football pitches and a Pavilion managed by the Community Sports Club, the area around which underwent a project in 2022 to create better disabled access, improved pathways, bicycle storage, informal seating and increased planting to create a more accessible, safer and more attractive environment.  During 2022 plans are underway for a public consultation on a large-scale project which will see significant investment in drainage for the field and new sporting and other recreational amenities.

The field hosts Fulford Football Club‘s home games and training and provides access to Fulford Tennis Club members.  It is also the home of the Annual Fulford Show every August Bank Holiday.

Village Green

The Village Green is an area of river bank at the bottom of Landing Lane. Volunteers have spent time planting, cutting back the bushes and weaving the willow in order to make the area more attractive. Tables and chairs have been provided. The area is cut only once a year in order to preserve the natural flora and fauna, something that is especially important as this is the habitat of the rare tansy beetle.

The tansy beetle is an attractive bright-green leaf beetle with a coppery sheen. The wings were so admired by Victorians that they used them as sequins. Although its range was once quite widespread it is now an endangered species, and found only on the banks of the Ouse. It feeds and lays its eggs on the tansy fern, so the parish council is attempting to preserve these plants as much as possible.

Unfortunately, frequent flooding means that debris is often deposited on the site and some inconsiderate visitors leave litter, with the consequence that the green isn’t always in as good a condition as we would wish. So, please enjoy this pleasant local facility and if you can help keep it clean and tidy at the same time Fulford Parish Council would be very grateful.
